Help: Questions prior to registering

Q. What are The EVVY Awards?

The 27th Annual EVVY Awards is the largest student-run awards show in the nation. Founded in 1981, The EVVY Awards was created to give Emerson students the opportunity to have their work judged and honored by industry professionals. Originally created to recognize achievement in television and video, the show has evolved to recognize achievement in nearly every area of study offered by Emerson College. The EVVY Awards continually evaluates and appropriately adds submissions categories, in order to provide more students with the opportunity to have their work recognized.

Q. Why should I submit to The EVVY Awards?

The work you submit to The EVVY Awards is judged by a panel of 3-4 industry professionals currently working in the field in which you submitted. Winning an EVVY is more than just getting a Lucite trophy. It means your work has been viewed by some of the top professionals in the entertainment and communications industries and has been deemed the best Emerson has to offer. There is no faster and easier way to get your work seen by those who know what it’s really like out there. So even if you don’t win an EVVY, your work will have preceded you when you are ready to leave Emerson and enter the competitive workforce of the entertainment and communications industries.

Q. Why do I have to pay to submit to The EVVY Awards?

The answer is two-fold. First, once the entries are submitted they are sent overnight to those industry professional judges, many of whom live in LA or other parts of the country (and even occasionally the world). The submission fee takes into account the standard cost it takes to send your submission overnight to most of these locations. Second, The EVVY Awards is a financially self-sufficient organization. It costs money to put on the largest student-run awards show in the country, and this money is raised through donations, ticket sales, and in large part, submissions. We do our best to keep submissions fees and ticket prices as low as possible.

Q. May I submit multiple works?

You may submit one work to multiple categories, or multiple works to a single category. For example: Film II project may be submitted to several categories, including "Outstanding Cinematography," "Outstanding Film Production," "Outstanding Single-Camera Director," "Outstanding Art Direction for Film or Television," and more. There is no rule against one work winning multiple categories. Alternatively, you may have produced several music videos this year, in which case you may submit some (or all) of them to "Outstanding Music Video," and so on. Make sure that you fill out a separate entry form and have a separate tape/copy for each work you submit, even if it is the same work in different categories.

Q. How do I submit?

There are few categories, such as "Outstanding Digital Photograph," "Outstanding Film Photograph," "Outstanding Journalism Photograph," Outstanding Integrated MArketing Campaign," "Outstanding Photo Series," Outstanding Beginner Film," "Outstanding Art Direction for Film or Television" that are hand submitted. The rest of the categories are submitted via our online process.
Once you register you will receive and email with instructions on how our FTP upload process works, for detailed instructions please read this upload help page
However, talent releases, media (only if it is a Hand-Submitted category), and payment still must be done in person at tables or the EVVY office at announced times.

Q. Do I have to be an Emerson Student to win an EVVY Award?

Yes, only Emerson students may submit to and win an EVVY Award. Even if you are a non-Emerson student working on an Emerson production you are not eligible.

Q. Why do I have to sign a Talent Release form?

The EVVY Awards are presented live onstage at the Cutler Majestic Theater, and is broadcast live on the Emerson Channel, BNN and over the Internet. Copies of the show may be sold or distributed in a variety of formats. The EVVY Awards requires that you sign the Talent Release Form so that, in the event that you are nominated for/or win an EVVY award, we may use your name, face and voice in The 27th Annual EVVY Awards in any manner or medium now known or later developed (including, without limitation, promotional video, commercial, television broadcast, the Internet, podcast, DVD, etc.).

Q. Who has to sign a Talent Release form?

The person registering the entry and all people listed as "Additional Participants" on the entry must sign a Talent Release form. Additional forms may be downloaded.

Q. Why do I have to sign a release for my work?

During the actual show, The EVVY Awards screens nominee and winner reels that include portions of the nominated and winning pieces. These are usually 10 seconds or less. Should you be nominated for, or win, an EVVY award, the Submission Release permits The EVVY Awards to show your work as part of the ceremony and in subsequent broadcasts and distribution of the show. The Submission Release Form also allows you the option of granting Emerson College, The EVVY Awards and/or the Emerson Channel the non-exclusive right to copy, distribute, broadcast or otherwise use your work in connection with the purposes stated on the form.

Q. What rights do I give up by signing the talent/entry release forms?

You retain ownership of your work. By checking one or all of the boxes on the Submission Release Form, you are granting the designated party a non-exclusive license to use your work as stated on the form.

Q. What is a closed category?

When a category does not have more than three (3) submissions, that category becomes Closed. What this means is that there are not enough entries in the category for The EVVY Awards to send submissions to the judges. Unfortunately, any work submitted into such a category cannot be considered for an EVVY award. The best way to ensure that this doesn’t happen is to tell all of your friends to submit so that there are enough submissions to keep the category open. And of course, you may also submit multiple works to a single category.

Q. What happens if my category is changed?

Your entry will be automatically entered in the next relevant category. You will be informed via email.

Q. Who do I make my check or money order out to?

"Emerson College / The EVVY Awards"
