As work on the EVVY Awards kicks off, you might find yourself interested in discovering what the show is all about. Here’s a list of “fun facts” you may not know about the largest student-produced award show any school has to offer.

The EVVY awards are one of the few chances you can visit the beautiful Cutler Majestic Theatre for an Emerson event. The theatre, built in 1903, was purchased and renovated by Emerson College. While the theatre is usually home to opera, theatre, and dance, this historical theatre is also the home of the EVVY awards.

By buying a ticket to the EVVYs, students can actually stay on campus for an extra two weeks. The last day of the spring semester is May fifth, but if you want to stay in Boston for an extra two weeks so that you can stay until the EVVYs on May fourteenth, all you have to do is buy a ticket. Not only do you get to stay in the dorms for free, your moving-out process is made super easy.

The EVVYs didn’t always call the Cutler Majestic its home. Originally, the show took place in the First and Second Church in Boston.

It’s not just an award show; it’s a chance for students to get involved. The EVVY awards are a student run organization that allows Emerson College students a chance to get involved in limitless ways. Because the show is so huge, students can get involved in marketing, stage production, acting, performing, filming, and in countless other ways.

The EVVYs are advised by the best. Television producer and director Kevin Bright, of Friends fame acts as the EVVYs main advisor.

Many past EVVYs hosts are now big deals in the entertainment business. For example, David Cross of Arrested Development fame, Max Mutchnick, a producer of Will and Grace, Joley Fisher of ‘Til Death and Desperate Housewives were all EVVYs hosts while they attended Emerson.

Although they weren’t hosts, many other notable celebrities have graced the stage of the EVVYs. These include Will and Grace’s Sean Hayes, Denis Leary of Rescue Me, and John Cusack.

The EVVYs make use of some of the most high-tech equipment Emerson has to offer. During the 29th EVVYs, the show used eleven cameras, including one on a 24-foot jib.

Although the EVVYs itself are an award show, it’s won some awards of it’s own. In 1993 the EVVYs were recognized by the National Association of College Broadcasters and the show has won two National Telly Awards, one in 1992 and the other in 1993.

The EVVYs offer a chance for Emerson students to celebrate the actions of their peers. Students can nominate their friends for “The Award of Distinction” if they believe they’ve made a real difference in their communities.
